Welcome To ATX's Own Raw Food Co-op for Pets

The Austin Raw Feeders' Co-op is a purchasing cooperative for people in the Austin, Texas metropolitan areas (including Buda, San Marcos, Kyle, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Hutto, Cedar Park, Leander, Manor, Elgin, Bastrop and Georgetown) who feed their pets a natural, fresh foods diet. We are an unincorporated non-profit association of friendly, like-minded people who value cooperative ideals. We promote education and community through classes and social events for members.

All Feeding Styles Welcome

Many of our members feed a meat and bones-based raw diet based on the work of Dr. Ian Billinghurst (formerly known as Bones and Raw Food, or BARF), but several different styles of feeding are represented in our membership and everyone is welcome, including those who feed a prey model diet, a cooked home-prepared diet or follow a different diet.

Strength In Numbers

Membership in the co-op allows us to band together and use our collective economic power to make direct bulk food purchases from many different suppliers, saving everyone money and providing greater variety in our pets' diet. Whenever possible, we purchase from suppliers who offer natural, grass-fed, and/or organic products.

Learn More About Our Policies

ARF Co-op began in 2002 as a loose association of raw-feeding friends who ordered staples from Buddy's Chicken (now closed) in Gonzales, Texas together. One member drove to the supplier every month and everyone picked it up at her house. As time passed and word spread around Austin we added more suppliers, grew in size, and fine-tuned our ordering and delivery model. Today we are structured more formally but are still a friendly association of like-minded folks. Our policies set forth how we operate.

Products and Pricing

ARF Co-op orders from a variety of local, state, and national suppliers on a monthly, bi-monthly and quarterly basis. (We are always looking for new suppliers as well.) Because we order together as a co-op and can meet large minimum-pound weight or total cost requirements from suppliers, we can purchase products at wholesale or discounted prices. We also save money on shipping this way!

Because we have no storefront, overhead, or middleman, we pass our savings directly on to our members. There are no hidden or embedded charges in our ordering system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join the co-op?

First, carefully read through the ARF Co-op Policies, which function as our by-laws. After you have familiarized yourself with the policies, if you feel that you can agree with them, submit a membership request to the co-op's mailing list at our Groups.io page.

We presently have hundreds of products that we order and we're constantly on the lookout for new products to add. We carry a full range of raw meaty bones, recreational bones, muscle meat, organ meat, and tripe from a variety of animals. We also carry some whole animals for people who prefer the whole-prey model of feeding. We carry a wide selection of convenient pre-made mixes, ground bones, and commercial raw foods as well. Costs on our meat products sometimes vary from month to month according to market rates, but we have some items under $1.00 a lb. and a wide selection in the $1.00 to $4.00 per lb. range.

IMPORTANT: As soon as your membership request has been approved, enter your contact information into the member database in Google Docs. (You'll receive information on how to do this once your membership is accepted.) You will not be able to place orders without this information on file. Orders for individual suppliers open on a specific date according to the Ordering Calendar.

You send your order to the order collector, who will announce the beginning of the ordering period on the co-op's mailing list, or you will enter it in the supplier's online shopping cart if one is available. You will also need to send pre-payment to the designated person (usually the site host) via PayPal. Late orders and/or payments are NOT accepted. For more information on ordering, see our Policies.

The delivery date and site host's location for every order we place is listed in the Ordering Calendar. On the delivery date, members go to pick up their food at the site host's location during the hours that the site host is open for distribution. This distribution time is always a minimum of two hours, and if food arrives early in the morning, there is usually a morning and an evening pick-up time offered.

If you know that you will be unable to make the actual or estimated delivery date for an order, pair up with someone else in the co-op to be your co-op buddy. Co-op buddies trade off/share pick-up duties with each other and save time and gas. We have members all over the Austin metropolitan area, so you should be able to find someone to assist you.

Running late, having previous social plans, or wanting to do something else on the evening of delivery is NOT a valid reason not to come get your food.If you have an absolute last-minute true emergency of a medical nature, have someone call the site host that day so we are aware of the problem.

Remembering Freya, the dog who started it all

18 years ago today, I brought a mangy, itching, largely hairless nine month-old white German Shepherd home from the Fayette County Animal Shelter. She smelled horrible, had no inside manners, and was dog aggressive, but she immediately loved little kids, especially my goddaughters. Her name was Freya, and she changed my life.
